Wheel Throwing 103: Scaling Up (August Weekend Intensive)

Take your wheel work to the next level by learning to throw bigger, wider, and with greater control.

Meeting over two consecutive days for 6 hours of instruction, this course is the perfect follow-on from Wheel Throwing 102 or for potters with at least 16 hours of previous wheel experience in another studio.

In Wheel Throwing 103: Scaling Up, the focus shifts to size as you learn to successfully handle and control larger amounts of clay. Working with an increased volume of clay introduces new challenges—centering becomes more demanding, walls require greater consistency, and maintaining structural integrity is key. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, you’ll build the confidence and techniques needed to scale up your work.

Depending on your individual experience, you’ll refine your throwing skills while exploring wider forms such as plates, platters, and oven dishes. Emphasis will be placed on even compression, controlling clay distribution, and preventing common issues like warping or cracking in larger pieces. By the end of the course, you’ll have a stronger understanding of how to approach larger-scale functional forms and a toolkit of techniques to continue developing your work on the wheel.

Up to four pieces can be fired at no additional cost, with a glazing session to follow in 5–6 weeks.
