Meet the Team

Selby Dickinson

Head of Educational Programming - Lead Instructor

Selby Jonathan makes functional stoneware from his studio in Stratford-upon-Avon. Ramen bowls in earthy greens and blues, thrown domestic forms built to be used daily rather than kept on a shelf — his practice is rooted in the British tradition of making objects that earn their place in a kitchen.

He is the lead tutor at The Old Bank. His approach to teaching is the same as his approach to making: he is more interested in a student developing a feel for the clay than in getting a tidy result in the first session. The first session rarely produces a tidy result. That turns out not to matter.

He teaches taster sessions, beginner and intermediate wheel-throwing courses, and works with members developing a longer-term practice. If you want to understand what you are doing and why, rather than just be talked through it, he is a good person to learn from.
